5 insider tips from the author ( who pushed dozends of websites
into a TOP 20 ranking ) . Never published before !
- Hidden
comments
Some searchengines ( for example : Google ) don`t care of the
METATAG Description we set up so lovefully. If you want to place
some extra words for them ( using keywords and describing your
site ) , use a HTML comment inside your "HEAD" section.
It`s not visible for website visitors, but some searchengines
use it to build a search result. A HTML comment looks like this
:
<!--Informations
about your website. Use your TOP 5 keywords here, too. -->
- List
your keywords in the page title
Some searchengines makes a difference where inside your webpage
title relevant keywords are listed. If it` s possible for you,
place keywords first. For example :
"My company.com offers : books, videos,
posters and free stuff"
..not bad, but better for your ranking is :
"Books, videos, posters and free stuff
by my company.com"
- Give
files and directories sensefull names
Searchengine robots always look for the matching of relevant
keywords. And this not only inside title, metatags and bodytext.
We can also optimize our sites with giving directories and pages
the right names. For example :
A page named "books.html" inside
a directoy named "books" on your webserver is much better
for searchengine rankings than a page "b_index_004.html"
inside a "temp_004" directory .
- Never
delete old pages - Use them for your rankings
Once you have submitted your site to the searchengines, their
spiders will visit your site and index all pages they can find
there.
Note, that searchengines are not able to control if a once submitted
site is still there or not ( think of all these "404 - page
not found" error messages ) . So if you plan to rename or
delete pages, think of that these old files are still listed inside
the searchengines and clicking on them will not amuse the users.
Don`t delete pages, that are already spidered
by the robots. Build in an redirection ( javascript or the META
Equiv "refresh" tag ) which redirects the visitor to
the page with the actual content.
Don`t rename pages that are already indexed
by the robots. If you like to have a different filename for a
page ( maybe because you have readed the tips above ) save the
already existing page under a different filename, update your
links and insert a redirection into the old one.
- Make
"deep links" visible for robots
Normally you will submit the URL of your website to searchengines.
The robots will visit your start page ( index.htm or default.htm
) and follow the links ( if you allowed this ) . Large Websites
have several directories with subdirectories which include more
subdirectories. Not all pages are mostly reachable direct from
the start page, it`s usual that we want the visitors to klick
the link "freebies" , then "downloads", then
"graphics" and so on to reach a page like "graphic-download.htm"
at the end, which is hidden deep down in the directory dumps of
our website.
The searchengine robots don`t follow these deep links all the
time. They normally scan your site from the webserver root up
to 1-2 directories and sometimes 1 subdirectory.
The more single pages of your website are listed in the searchengine
the higher your chances to reach lots of visitors.
Create a simple HTML page that includes
nothing except hyperlinks to all pages you want to have listed
inside the searchengines. Set the "robots" METATAG to
"noindex" so that this "little helper" will
not get indexed.
Some searchengines don`t accept submission of pages that are not
the "index.html" ( or whatever your starting page is
).
Set a link to the "link page"
on your start page ( somewhere where it`s not confusing your visitors,
for example : deep down at the bottom or inside a graphic that
will not be clicked accidentially by users ) . The robots will
follow this link, find your "little helper" and index
the linked pages there, too.
That`s why eyeland.com is listed with over 80 single
( and unique ) pages inside Google & Co....
